Part of The Living is Easy: a series of projects by Struts & Faucet members

Think Outside The Box

The research for this series focuses itself somewhere between pictorial and three-dimensional concerns; between the literal and the illusory. “Think Outside the Box” is a series of geometrical shaped paintings that play on the idea of perceptual illusionism and the illustration of volume. My interest for shaped canvas is in its ability to stand out; to engage the viewer to see the paintings as an object instead of a flat surface.

My living is easy project presents multiple shaped canvases, which are regrouped into a hexagon-like form. Each surface is individually built. They can be shifted, re-arranged or left absent in new structures and compositions. However, the constraints brought on by the bounding shape of a hexagon led me to arbitrarily choose some of the content shown in the paintings and work around these elements, which, I believe, results in a more spontaneous painting approach.
