Part of The Living is Easy: a series of projects by Struts & Faucet members

Think Outside The Box

The research for this series focuses itself somewhere between pictorial and three-dimensional concerns; between the literal and the illusory. “Think Outside the Box” is a series of geometrical shaped paintings that play on the idea of perceptual illusionism and the illustration of volume. My interest for shaped canvas is in its ability to stand out; to engage the viewer to see the paintings as an object instead of a flat surface.

My living is easy project presents multiple shaped canvases, which are regrouped into a hexagon-like form. Each surface is individually built. They can be shifted, re-arranged or left absent in new structures and compositions. However, the constraints brought on by the bounding shape of a hexagon led me to arbitrarily choose some of the content shown in the paintings and work around these elements, which, I believe, results in a more spontaneous painting approach.

Originally From St-Antoine, New-Brunswick, Mario LeBlanc completed his Fine Arts Degree at Université de Moncton in 2013, where he concentrated in sculpture and painting. Since 2010, Mario has actively been showing in solo and group exhibits. He represented UdeM at Peinture fraîche et nouvelle construction in Montreal, a group show that featured fine arts graduates throughout Canada in 2012. Mario has also had the opportunity to work as an artist and assistant on multiple monumental publics sculptures, and was recipient of an ArtsNB grant in 2014.

The Living is Easy is a series of projects by Struts & Faucet members that provides a platform for the research, production, and presentation of new works.
