To expand on the themes and creative possibilities of bookmaking following Barbara Sternberg’s book launch and screening the night before, artist Jessica Thalmann will lead a workshop with participants interested in unique and sculptural techniques to build, fold and bind handmade artist books. This workshop is suitable for photographers, painters, collage and interdisciplinary artists wishing to explore the book structure and form using paper, and folding.

Thalmann will present a lecture on artists who use unconventional book practices such as Karen Hanmer and Ed Rucha along with her recent body of work ‘Pleats of Matter’. Participants will be guided through the creation of a several types of folded books including accordion (and triangle variations on the accordion fold), squash fold and one-page folded zines. Basic paper, board and folding materials will be provided but please bring images you want to work with: either your own, archival imagery from family photo albums, public archives, internet etc . . .

Jessica Thalmann is an artist, curator and writer currently based in Toronto and New York City. She received a MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies from ICP-Bard College and a BFA in Visual Arts from York University. She has worked at the Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto International Film Festival, C Magazine, the Art Gallery of York University and Yossi Milo Gallery. She has shown at various venues in Toronto, Vancouver and New York City including the Art Gallery of Mississauga, Flash Forward Festival, Gallery TPW, Hashtag Gallery, Whippersnapper Gallery, Nuit Blanche, the Artist Project, VIVO Media Arts Center, Aperture Foundation, International Centre of Photography, Photoville, Camera Club of New York and Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair.
