July 28, 2016 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Workshop
7:00pm – 9:00pm
Thursday July 28
Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre, 7 Lorne Street

Sound-based music uses sounds, rather than notes, chords, rhythms, etc., as the basic material for creating musical compositions. This workshop will explore an almost 70-year-old electroacoustic music making tradition that has produced compelling works with recorded sounds alone, and without the need for traditional musical components such as melodies, chord sequences or drum patterns. Participants will listen to examples of sound-based music, learn how recorded sounds can be conceived as musical ideas and structures, and explore freeware useful for transforming sounds into interesting gestures and textures for compositions or soundtracks. Participants are encouraged to bring along a laptop (Mac preferred) for working with the free software, available through links prior to the workshop.

Space is limited, reserve your spot by e-mailing festival@strutsgallery.ca
