‘Liens intimes et problématiques’ (2014) is for the integral string quartet (violin, viola, cello, and bass) and explores magnetism, repulsion, and uniqueness. Made up of ninety-six sonic instances where four sounds created by four individuals come out from silence, coalesce and move though infinite gradations of harmony — exploring, discovering every nuance — until naturally retracting and breaking apart back into silence. Each of the ninety-six sound events is similar in structure form one to the next, however no two will ever be like any other, like snowflakes and sunset. These ninety-six sonic moments uncover a different beauty and a different rawness. André Cormier is the Ok.Quoi?! composer-in-residence.

Ensemble Sisyphe was established in 2009 as the performing branch of Éditions musique Sisyphe, a publishing house for experimental music. The ensemble’s aesthetic concentration is to engage with the very essentials of music: sound + silence. Its goals are to form alliances with composers from within the ‘house’ and beyond. The ensemble invites the public to explore a unique musical world in the search of inspiration and beauty. www.emsis.ca
